UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

In 2014, Edge of Arabia, launched a cross-cultural tour across the United States of America, with the aim to connect artists and inspire better understanding between the two regions. The project was called CULTURUNNERS, and was defined as a new model for cultural diplomacy and exchange based on the power of art and artists stories to transcend physical and psychological borders around the world.

As the tour developed, CULTURUNNERS has grown to encompass three main activities:

1. A grassroots road trip across the United States in a 34ft Gulf Stream RV transformed into a mobile artist studio and broadcasting station. The Culturunners RV hosts a revolving group of artists, writers, curators and activists in search of common concerns between the United States and Middle East. On 21 September 2014, the United Nations Intenational Day of Peace, CULTURUNNERS launched its road-trip, in partnership with Art Jameel, at the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas.

2. A major Cultural Diplomacy programme of exhibitions, talks and workshops at American institutions including universities, museums, and government organisations, as well as community centres and activist groups. In 2016 CULTURUNNERS was invited to produce a major project promoting Saudi Arabian artists across the United States by King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture.

3. A film-focused media campaign exploring the most urgent social and political issues across the United States through the eyes of traveling Middle Eastern artists. In 2016 CUTURUNNERS launched a short video series called Crossing the Line in partnership with The Guardian. Crossing the Line embodies a new type of journalism - one that believes in the soft power of artists to explore divisive subjects with empathy and insight.
