Issam Kourbaj

1963 born in Suweida, Syria and lives and works in Cambridge, UK.

Issam Kourbaj studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Damascus, the Repin Institute of Fine Arts, Leningrad, and at Wimbledon School of Art, London.

Since 1990, he has lived and worked in Cambridge, becoming a Bye-Fellow (2007-2011) and Artist-in-Residence at Christ's College, where he is also a Lector in art.

He has exhibited in solo and group shows including Damascus.1984; Ganz Galleries Cambridge, 1999; 'Iraq's Past Speaks to the Present', British Museum, 2008-9; Shubbak: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture, London, 2011.

He developed a travelling installation 'Another Day Lost' for the third iteration of the Shubbak Festival, which travelled from London (July 2015) to Trinity Wall Street, New York (December 2015); Twelve Gates Arts, Philidelphia (February 2016); Alserkal Avenue, Dubai (March 2016); Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge (May 2016); Central European University, Budapest (June 2016).

Since 2011, he has dedicated his time to raising awareness and money for projects and aid in Syria through several exhibitions in Kuwait, London and Cambridge.
