Edge of Arabia hosted Afikra for the 27th edition of their NYC meetings. Afikra is a global community dedicated to cultivating curiosity around Arab history and culture. They host a monthly salon-style evening where two members of the community present about cultural and historical topics they are curious about. The purpose of each evening is to bring together a community of like-minded individuals and have a fruitful conversation about things we don't know much about. They hope to cultivate curiosity around Arab history and culture and create a global community of folks interested in engaging in that process. Previous topics have included 1960s Egyptian film, Ottoman legal traditions, Omani architecture, the history of the hair salon industry in Casablanca, the great authors of post-modern Sudan, and many more.
The Arab Art & Education Initiative connects contemporary Arab culture with diverse audiences across the five boroughs of New York City. Delivered by a coalition of artists, foundations, and major institutions, the city-wide, year-long program aims to build greater understanding between the United States and the Arab world. Programming for the AAEI is guided by a commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 global goals set forth by the UN and world leaders in 2015 to realize a better world by 2030.
